JEE Main 2019 Update: Merit List to be Based on Percentile Score

JEE Main 2019 Update: Merit List to be Based on Percentile Score

Yet another big news for JEE Main aspirants, According to MHRD, now the merit list for admission in engineering colleges, including Indian Institutes of Technology and National Institute of Technology and others, through the JEE Main examination will be based on percentile scores and not the raw marks aspirants score in the test. This new development has come up after HRD minister, Suresh Prabhu announced that NTA will conduct the JEE exam and not CBSE.

According to the statement of a senior HRD ministry official given to Times of India, the process of percentile is an introduction to normalization of marks for the admission in engineering colleges. This normalization procedure is based on percentile score which will be used to arrive at the NTA score that has been based on the format in practice for the undergraduate-MBBS test conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Prakash Javadekar has announced that from now onward the NEET and JEE exam will be conducted twice in a year from 2019. The conducting agency will be the government’s National Testing Agency (NTA). According to the new format, a test will be conducted over a period of around 14 days in each cycle with multiple sessions each day. They are planning to introduce a device that is intended to significantly reduce the prospects of cheating and manipulation.

Apart from this, National Testing Agency (NTA) announced a new marking and ranking system for JEE Main 2019. As per the new policy announced by the Government of India, JEE Main 2019 will be conducted in multiple sessions, each session will have its own NTA percentile score with the highest scorer as 100 percentile.

Explaining the format, an NTA official elaborated that candidates may get different sets of questions per session and though efforts will be made to maintain equivalence among various question papers. He also confirmed that difficulty level of questions in the question paper may vary but the percentile score of each session for the aspirant is based on the relative performance of students in that particular shift. The official assured that the percentile system will be a tool that will bridge the gap between scores obtained for different JEE exam difficulties by scoring accordingly.

The National Testing Agency will prepare a master NTA score so that all the sessions of JEE Main exam will be put together for a final ranking. And the score of the top-ranked candidate as per final ranking will be 100 percentile. However, in the case of a tie between two students scoring 100 percentile, the topper will be the one who has the highest percentile in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics in that order. Further, in case of a tie at this position too, the candidates will be conferred with the joint rank in JEE Main 2019.

This same procedure will be applied by the National Testing Agency for the JEE Main 2 examination that is scheduled to take place in April 2019. NTA will announce the final merit list only after the announcement of JEE Main April 2019 results. Candidates who appear for both JEE Main January 2019 and JEE Main April 2019 exam must note that the better percentile will count in the JEE Main 2019 final merit list.
