Here are 5 tips for organizing your storage unit and keeping it from becoming a junk-box.
1. Categorize Items
Before you pack items to go inside your storage unit, identify which items you’ll need to access most often.
These items need to be identified before you place them in a box somewhere so you can make sure they are placed near the front of the unit where you can easily access them whenever you need.
You’ll also want to categorize items by size, weight, and even season or frequency of use, (things like holiday decorations may be better farther back). This makes it easy to know which items to place at the bottom of a stack and which to put into the unit first.
2. Choose One Standard Box Size
It may seem like you’ll save space to put things in smaller boxes, but this ends up causing more work than you think. Choosing one standard box size for most of your items will make stacking and storing things neater and easier.
Place as many items as you can fit in fewer, large boxes of the same size. Doing so will prevent you from playing Tetris when it comes to filling your unit.
3. Make a Master List
Too many storage unit users place items inside their unit, only to completely forget what they put in there. That’s why making a master list of all the items you’ve packed away comes in handy.
You can refer back to your list and remember where items are and what you packed. You can take it a step further and create a digital inventory list to check off as you pack or unpack items.
4. Draw a Layout
It may help to draw a blueprint of where you want to place items before you start unloading them. Place larger items like furniture or mattresses against the walls.
You’ll also need to leave a pathway down the center of your unit so you can walk through and reach items in the back and on both sides. Drawing a layout first will also help you avoid placing frequently needed items at the bottom of a heavy stack of boxes.
5. Label Everything
