5 Tips When Hiring a Commercial Mover for Your Office Relocation

While moving from an apartment to a house or just from one home to another can be a huge undertaking itself, moving an entire office can be exponentially more so and is a huge step for any business. It’s not simply a matter of getting rid of old junk, packing up a few boxes, loading a truck and heading off to your new location. With that in mind, we wanted to share our top 5 tips to remember when hiring commercial movers.

1. Pick Your Commercial Mover

Working with reputable commercial movers means that you’ll get the experience needed to help ensure that your office relocation is as stress-free as possible. In order to help alleviate any unforeseen scheduling conflicts, you should begin planning and scheduling your move at least 2 months in advance. Most reputable commercial movers are busy throughout the year and operate on tight schedules, so do your research and speak with a few commercial movers before making your final decision and leave yourself plenty of time to get the schedule you need.

2. Are They Insured?

While a residential move may not necessitate moving insurance, you certainly need it for commercial movers. Before deciding to schedule your move with any particular company, do your homework and verify that they have the experience, manpower, and resources you require, but that they also have quality mover’s insurance. This is especially important if you are currently located in a shared office building as it helps cover all involved parties.

3. What are Your Current Office Requirements?

You’ll need to know several things about your current and new location before hiring a commercial mover. Is moving only allowed during certain times? Are floor coverings required? Are certain elevators off limits? Do you have to complete a move-out cleaning? Speak with both location’s building superintendents and find out the exact requirements, stipulations, and rules pertaining to your move and you’ll likely prevent issues that could throw a wrench in the whole plan and the experience will generally go much smoother.

4. Carefully Pick Your Helpers

The last thing you need is for critical equipment to be damaged or important documents to be lost. While it may seem like a good idea to have your entire staff on-hand to help pack up, you have to remember that you’re moving the essentials required to successfully operate your business. Make sure everything is packed with care, shrink-wrap file cabinets, pay attention to the manufacture documents for properly moving electronic equipment or do some extra research to learn how to properly package and move them.

5. Label EVERYTHING

Numbering boxes, labeling equipment, and identifying individual file cabinets is important for any office relocation, but especially more-so when working with a commercial mover. Labeling and adding each item to an inventory list will ensure that important items make it to the new location, get set up in a timely manner, and know immediately if anything got left behind or is missing.

Working with commercial movers is definitely the right way to complete an office relocation and if you follow the above checklist, you’ll help ensure that it is as smooth as possible.
