Do not treat this as a casual ask, however. Instead, you should consider a cold pitch to be more of a job application. Write a great email that acts as a cover letter and includes reasons why you are interested in writing about whatever they are focused on.
Perhaps offer some ideas of pieces you could pitch and write. On top of that, make sure to include any writing samples that you already have. While professional and published samples are obviously ideal, you can send in school papers or blog posts if that is what you have.
Follow your favorite companies on social media
Another fantastic way to find freelance jobs online for a writer is to follow all of the sites and companies that you would love to write for. Not only can you engage with their social pages (which are probably run by a writer/editor that is already staffed), but you can also get notifications and see if they have any job postings for freelance or recurring work.
Just make sure that your social media page represents you in the way that you would want it to in the event that a potential employer takes a look!
Look on Craigslist and LinkedIn
It might seem impossible to find great job opportunities on job posting sites like Craigslist or LinkedIn, but it is actually quite easy. You just have to have a discernible eye and be willing to do the research to make sure that you know the difference between a great opportunity and a potential scam.
