Sometimes things happen that you think can only occur in the world of fiction, but they do happen and take you by surprise. One similar incident happened with one Romanian citizen named Lonel Roman Hailing from Craiova, which is a southern city in the country. The authorities in the country arrested Roman on March 5th, 2021 and he is facing charges of hacking, IT fraud and money laundering. At this front, the details have remained a bit sparse for now. For some unknown reasons, the Directorate for Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism chose to not put forward the name of the specific crypto exchange operator.
Instead, it was claimed by the organization that Roman, who is a citizen of Romania, had successfully managed to launch a cyberattack against the world’s ‘seventh largest’ crypto operator. This does narrow it down a bit, but the lack of clarity about the crypto operator was undoubtedly an intriguing prospect. According to the Romanian authorities, this cyber attack had been launched back near the end of January this year. The authorities further elaborated that the accused was able to launch this attack through an API code that he owned unlawfully. The accused had used this rather juicy bit of software to allegedly gaining complete access to the crypto operator’s computer system.
The announcement also provided some details about how cryptocurrencies had been successfully transferred by Roman across a number of addresses and wallets, all in a move to hide the real identity of the person behind the cyberattack. In total, Roman had managed to steal cryptocurrencies that were valued at $620,000. Once he had done so, he transferred all the crypto assets he had obtained to different crypto trading platforms. From there, the man attempted to capitalize on what he had stolen.
He also tried to dodge the authorities, but his efforts really didn’t get him any results. However, in an attempt to do so, the barber from Romania had continued to make transactions that were under the value of 10,000 Romanian Lei. This is the minimum amount that’s required to begin producing documents about why you have to move so much money. If you calculate it right, this would be around $2,499 in value. Any transaction under the 10,000 mark is approved without raising any flags, so he preferred to keep it under this mark.
The event was made a great deal more interesting by the fact that a barber of all people somehow had the technical know-how for doing this and stealing so much of cryptocurrencies. Obviously, it has brought about a number of questions in the mind of people, but it will undoubtedly be tough for Roman the Romanian to provide an apt explanation for everything that has happened. Authorities had managed to get 10,800 Romanian Lei from Roman’s home and they also seized different pieces of electronic equipment as well in order to determine what he has done with the rest of the crypto he has stolen.
