One of the many unfortunate side effects of the ongoing pandemic is the effect on employment. Unemployment rates were high last year and continue to be an issue for those who were let go from their positions.
Finding information on unemployment benefits online can be confusing. What are the different types available for your circumstances and how do you qualify? Are the State of California unemployment benefits easy to get?
Here’s everything you need to know to get started.
State of California Unemployment Benefits
There are many types of CA unemployment benefits available for application. Knowing them can save you from wasting time applying for the wrong ones.
The regular state Unemployment Insurance (UI) provides up to 26 weeks of benefits in a single year. This is the one you’re most likely familiar with already.
Some people may find that they’ve used up all their standard unemployment benefits. In that case, you can apply for the Federal-State Extension Duration which gives another 13 weeks minimum later in the year.
Recently, there have been Pandemic Unemployment programs available for application. They can provide anywhere between 11 weeks to 86 weeks of benefits depending on your situation.
Qualifications
To qualify for State of California unemployment benefits, you must have earned a certain amount through work in the 12-month base period before applying. This is so the state can determine how much to make your weekly benefits.
You have to be either totally or partially unemployed through no fault of your own. Furthermore, you should be actively searching for employment and physically able to work as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program was made to assist unemployed Californians struggling during the pandemic. Eligibility is limited to people who didn’t qualify for the standard unemployment benefits. This includes those who have found work limited or nonexistent as a result of COVID-19.
How to File
The best way to file for unemployment is online. UI Online is an online portal run by the State of California. On it, you’ll have to provide proof of citizenship, employment history, and any federal or military documents.
You can apply for either Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) or the standard unemployment benefits through UI Online. Don’t apply for PUA if you qualify for regular UI.
