Corporal Punishment As A Part Of The Culture

Corporal Punishment As A Part Of The Culture

In February 2021, a bill was passed to ban corporal punishment in educational institutions, especially in child care institutions. The bill was passed by cross-party support however when it reach the Senate it was accepted but with little changes that due to religious lens the teacher can apply force to maintain the discipline to teach ethics and morals to the students. We are not sure whether these punishments are a part of religion but it is a part of our social and cultural norms that a child should be beaten to work according to a specific mold.

According to the norm of society elderly people have the right to use a cane or physical you punish the student or child to teach them manners and especially for not listening or learning. The concept of physical violence on children has been perpetrated across generations before the articulation of children’s rights. It means not listening or seeing the child but beating them up to create a robot according to a specific mold. Researches have proven that physical punishment makes children worse than disciplining them or expecting a positive outcome from their personality. They are only disciplined due to the fear of punishment or in the presence of the adult. Whenever they get free time away from adults their behavior is self-regulatory and much worse.

They develop a negative attitude towards the children and training institutions and schools because of the brutal behavior they face there. According to an estimate, many children have been driven away from school due to the humiliation they face and the physical punishment. Having the right of violence over children gives the teacher a sort of power or control over them which he overuses. So beating them and humiliating them to make them disciplined is against human rights and children’s rights and should be condemned.

Physical punishment adversely affects the social, moral, and cognitive development of children and causes psychological issues like aggressive behavior in all situations. Children who have experienced violence during their childhood are most likely to develop a negative approach towards others, they are always ill-mannered, they are unable to resolve conflicts and bully others. Moreover, during the developing years, they can also develop criminal behavior and be responsible for domestic violence.

The new is perfectly good and has all the requirements to be e administered by the ministry of human rights. It includes education and protection services for children in religious institutions, rehabilitation centers, Foster Care centers, and child care institutions. It has also created a ban on physical punishment and all types of violence against children. Serious actions would be taken against the teachers like withholding their promotions or dismissal from service. But this law, however, is not enough, teachers, as well as parents, have to approach this issue positively. Parents who belong to rural backgrounds or are less educated advise the teachers to punish their children physically which is something that needs to be discussed. However, no culture promotes the concept of corporal punishment and it is the responsibility to throw it away.
