Whether you are driving down a highway or just through the streets of your city or town, you never want to have any doubt in your mind that your vehicle’s brakes are working properly. Unfortunately, you may at some point find yourself noticing certain things that indicate your brakes are in need of repair. To know when it’s time to get your brakes serviced, here are four signs that always indicate brake problems.
Dashboard Brake Light is On
If you notice your dashboard brake light is staying on while you are driving, this can indicate a potential problem. If you’re lucky, the light is on because you failed to release your emergency brake. If that’s not the case, a brake problem is likely starting and needs to be checked out right away.
Squealing Noises
Whenever you are hearing noises of any kind coming from your brakes, it’s usually never good. If you notice your brakes be squealing or squeaking each time you press on the brake pedal when coming to a stop, this is an indication of brake trouble. In most instances, these noises mean your brake pads are wearing out and coming into contact with the rotor, resulting in that high-pitched squeal or squeak you are hearing.
Spongy Brakes
When you push your vehicle’s brake pedal, you always want to feel some resistance. If you don’t and your brakes feel spongy or soft, chances are you need expert brake service right away. Potential problems could range from having air in your braking system due to your vehicle leaking brake fluid to problems with the master cylinder. In either case, get your car serviced as soon as possible.
Burning Smell
Finally, you never want to notice a strong burning smell when you try to apply your brakes. If you try to come to a stop and notice an immediate burning smell that has a strong chemical odor, this usually means your brakes are overheating when being used. Unfortunately, this may also indicate your vehicle is in danger of experiencing complete brake failure if you continue to drive. To play it safe, pull over and let your brakes cool off for a few minutes. If you are sure this is not being caused by your emergency brake being accidentally left on, you may have a brake caliper that is locked in place.
Driving with bad brakes is always a recipe for disaster not only for yourself, but for the other drivers on the road with you as well. If you notice any of these signs of possible brake problems, don’t delay in getting your brakes inspected and serviced.
