You may find plenty of articles on the Internet about “tips on how to make an outstanding presentation or a pitch deck”, “5 ways to make your presentation look better” and so on. But is a PowerPoint presentation really what you need? Let’s find out in this article.
A nice-looking presentation can’t replace your idea
A professional presentation can make the speaker or startup founder more confident while pitching, but even the most beautiful, animated, and interactive presentation can’t replace the idea that lies at the heart of the product you’re pitching. A Prezi-like presentation can make a wow-effect — but will it make people buy a product if it’s unfinished or doesn’t differ from the rest on the market?
Focus on the product and people’s needs it meets. Make market research, ask for feedback from the existing customers — and then follow the next point.
Content is the king
You can generally hear this advice from marketing specialists, who urge you to make high-quality content, but in this article, we’d like to highlight that content and storytelling are the basis of a memorable speech. Before opening PowerPoint and looking for design references or trying to choose the best font, open your notes and answer the main questions:
- What problem does your product solve?
- What makes you different from your competitors?
- Why do investors have to invest or why should some people become your customers?
Answers to these questions will make up the skeleton of your pitch. What’s next? Cover it in a fascinating story to show how your product is applicable in real life. The audience adores stories — why not imagine a girl named Jane who had a kind of difficulty that was solved with your product?
At this stage, you also don’t need a presentation to convey your ideas. Or not?
Your visual language should be consistent with your tone of voice and positioning
As a presentation design company that has been operating since 2014, our team has faced different tasks and speeches. In some cases, we see that speakers don’t need a presentation — they convey their ideas in a clear manner without it. Others really need PowerPoint presentations, because they want to:
— show up some data to the audience and to compare something;
— send a presentation via email as a follow-up or as a commercial offer;
— upload it on their website for a customer being able to find out more etc.
In such a case, it’s important to convey your values and positioning with the design. Let’s take a look at the examples.
This client wanted to underline the traditionalism of the Arabic perfumes they produce:

Another example: even without reading the text you can take a look at the design and find out that this company is engaged in data analytics:

What underlying idea do you want to convey with the design — being friendly and adventurous or serious and reserved? Traditional or up-to-date?
Once these questions are answered, now you can open PowerPoint — or turn to a professional PowerPoint designer or agency.
So do you really need a professional presentation to sell or pitch your products?
Marketing starts with a great product, and there’s nothing about presentation. Before making a presentation, please make sure you know what you offer and how you differ from everything available at a chosen market. Make up a story that will make people fall for your product. And still, there’s nothing about the presentation.
But in case you need to have a file that visually conveys a big idea that stands behind your business, a professional PowerPoint presentation can really be a great solution.
